Choosing the Right Jump Rope for Training

Statistics show that jumping rope is one of the best exercise options where safety is a concern. It puts minimal stress on your joints and helps you maintain a good posture.

Finding the right rope for training does not need to be difficult. Some of the most common things to keep in mind include:

  • Thickness is one of the most important things to keep in mind when choosing a rope.  If the rope is thick with a low-density cable, you are will get more air resistance.  For beginners, I suggest a thinner rope with high to medium density.
  • Choose a rope with firm and comfortable handles. Check out what material is used. It should be strong, lightweight, and durable
  • For martial arts training, I recommend 4 mm leather or steel ropes. Use weighted ropes if jumping rope is one of your main forms of workout.
  • If you intend to train in damp conditions, stay away from jump ropes with wood or leather handles
  • If aesthetics are important to you, consider getting a rope with some beading. Plastic beading is beautiful and great for putting on a show
  • Find a jump rope of the right length. To test the length of your rope, step on the middle and pull it towards your shoulders. If it is the right length, the cables should fall around your armpits. If the jump rope is too long they are almost always adjustable. Newly purchased ropes come extra-long so that you can shorten to the best length for you use.

What are the Different Types of Jump Ropes?

A basic jump rope is a good choice for those who don’t have much experience in jumping rope. Most of them are simple and affordable. They are lighter than weighted ropes and thicker than most speed ropes.

Weighted Jump Ropes

Weighted jump ropes are great for a good arm and shoulder workout. They have an additional weight that requires extra exertion. Weights vary but they generally range from one to six pounds. They are better for experienced rope jumpers.

Speed Jump Ropes

These jump ropes are great for speed. Most of them are lightweight, they have thin cords. These types of jump ropes are great for fast-paced speed and improving your footwork.

Segmented/Beaded Jump Ropes

Beaded ropes are great for both experts and beginners. They are great for rhythmic jumping competitions because of their dramatic effect. The ropes are light but the beads add just enough weight to minimize tangling.

How to Minimize Injuries When Jumping Rope

Even though the jumping rope is a safe exercise option, getting injured is a possibility. The following are a few tips to keep in mind to avoid injuries when jumping rope.

Find the Right Surface

The surface where you jump should be flat and even. Whether you choose to jump on an indoors or outdoors surface, ensure that it is hard. Avoid jumping on concrete floors or carpet

Engage Your Wrist

When jumping rope, engage your wrist rather than your arms. Keep your hands close to the front of your hip bones. This way, your wrist will be doing most of the hard work.

Avoid Hunching Your Back When Running

When jumping, always keep your back straight, your head and chest up, and your shoulders pulled back. Most of the impact should be on your hamstring and buttocks. Not the entire body. Hunching your back could lead to back pain after a while. It will also prevent you from getting the maximum benefits of the exercise.

Find the Right Rope

The rope you choose could have a significant impact on your overall experience. The main difference is the handle, the type (and quality) of rope rotation (eg. ball bearings), the type of rope material (eg. steel wire) and its coating (eg PVC or Polymer).

Don’t Jump Too High

You don’t need to jump too far from the ground to get good results. Jump ½ to one inch off the ground. This way, you can minimize the effort to continue for longer or to increase your speed, or both.

What are the Advantages of Jumping Rope?

The jump rope is a convenient and effective tool with lots of benefits. Some of its advantages include;

  • It can burn more than 1000 calories for every accumulative hour of exercise
  • It can improve your heart rate up to three times faster than other exercises
  • It engages lots of muscle groups
  • It is more fun than many other types of exercises
  • It promotes mental sharpness by developing the right and left hemispheres of the brain. There is some evidence that this helps boost your memory and spatial awareness

Product Review

Ballistyx Premium Speed Jump Rope

This is a great jump rope for experts. However, it may also be a good option for beginners who don’t mind swimming with the exercise sharks.

It comes with two ropes – a speed rope and a slightly heavier power rope.  Both ropes are of good enough quality to last without wearing out prematurely.

The handle is smooth and comfortable to hold. I like the nonslip grips for when my hands get sweaty.  There is some weight to the handle, but not too much.  The ball bearings work really well.

The ropes don’t tangle which is important.  The length can be adjusted and it is possible to leave some extra length in the handle in case you decide you want to lengthen in later.  The length of the rope as it comes will suit someone up to about 6’4” but no taller.

Strictly speaking this is not a premium jump rope, but it is not far off and it costs less than a premium jump rope.  It is a really good rope for consistent training and exercise.

Pros Cons
  • Comfortable handle with some weight
  • 2 x cables (1 speed, 1 power)
  • Good ball bearings
  • Easy to adjust length
  • Not suitable for someone over 6’4”
  • Changing out ropes not quick

WOD Nation Speed Jump Rope

This is a fast, high-quality jump rope.  It is sturdy and durable. It is a great option for both elite athletes and beginners.

The jump rope material is plastic-sheathed steel material which is a lot better than regular plastic. It is sturdy and pretty heavy. You don’t need to worry about breaking this one.

Solidly built

The handles are nice, high-grade, and comfortable, if a tad small.  The ball bearings spin freely and make it smooth and fast.  This is what you expect from a speed rope.

Adjusting the length is easy but cutting the wire to reduce it requires something that can cut through the wire.

This is a good jump rope for double unders and even triple unders if you fancy having a go.  In fact, this rope is fast enough to make double unders easier than single unders.

The material is thin and it moves fast.  This can make it painful if it hits you at speed.  This makes it less ideal for a beginner or someone learning new tricks and prone to hitting themselves often.

Pros Cons
  • Price
  • Easy to adjust length
  • Good ball bearings – fast and smooth
  • Comfortable handle
  • Spare cable
  • Thin material at speed can be painful

LOMA Premium Balanced Weighted Jump Rope

This is one of my favorite jump ropes. It has everything I look for in a jump rope; solid handles, a solid construction, adjustable length, and a fair price.

This jump rope can increase the intensity of aerobic training. It can help you get in shape and build your endurance fast.

The jump rope has an association with Lomachenko. It is not only great for MMA training but also weight loss and getting into shape.

The jump rope has an ergonomic grip that stays comfortable in your grip as you use it.  The handles are made from titanium allow which makes them light in your hands.  Because of design the handles will slide down the rope when you pick them up.  Not really a problem but worth a mention.

The steel cables are wrapped in plastic.  The length of the cable is super easy and quick to adjust. The bearing works so smoothly that speed is not a problem.  Double unders are not a problem.

The meal plan, travel bag, a wrist band, and most of all a spare rope is a nice bonus.  All in all I think this is one of the best value for money jump ropes on the market.

Pros Cons
  • Price
  • Titanium Allow handles
  • Easy to adjust length
  • Smooth bearings
  • 2 x cables
  • Handles slide down rope when not in use

Sonic Boom M2 High-Speed Jump Rope

I recommend this new and improved speed jump rope for serious athletes.  It is faster and more efficient than most jump ropes in the same price range.

It has high-grade 360-degree ball bearings. The stainless steel handles have an anti-slip silicone grip makes it a great choice for long exercise hours.

The jump rope comes with 2 x cables made from polymere coated steel wire.  The coating is good from reducing friction to get more speed.  With the speed of this rope means double unders are no problem.  Even triple unders are possible if you want to give it a go.

It is super easy to adjust the length with self-locking, screw-free, system.  However, the process of cutting the rope length can be a little fiddly.  Fortunately it is not something that you should need to do more than once.

As a bonus this rope comes with a free online training course to help beginners get started.

Pros Cons
  • Super easy to adjust length
  • Comfortable stainless steel handles
  • Anti-slip grip
  • Auto-locking, no screws, adjustment
  • Good bearings
  • 2 x cables
  • Cutting the rope length is a little fiddly

5BILLION Speed Jump Rope

I recommend this jump rope for circuit training, martial arts, and fitness. The weight promotes maximum speed and its high-quality construction means you can use it for a long time.

The handles of this speed jump rope are comfortable, light, and easy.  The handles are anodized aluminum which is strong enough to withstand continued use.  They are covered with foam for comfort and easy grip.  The 15cm length makes it easy to use.  The 360 degree bearings make it a good speed jump rope.

The rope is steel with a PVC plastic coating.  The 3M length makes it suitable for a tall person and.  You can easily adjust the length without any screws. You simply need to bend and fasten it.

You can travel around with the rope without having to worry about tangling and twisting. You can use it to exercise both indoors and outdoors.

This is a good speed rope that is suitable for beginners and individuals that are experienced.  This jump rope is not as durable as our other recommendations, but for the price it is good value for money.  Especially when you consider that it comes with a spare cable, spare screw kit and a nice carry bag.

Pros Cons
  • Price!
  • Long, non-slip handles
  • 360 degree ball bearings
  • Lightweight
  • 2 x cables

Conclusion

Jumping rope is one of the safest, most effective and convenient types of cardio exercise. It is fun (once you start to get the hand of it) and you can incorporate it into any workout routine. You can do it at home, at the gym, or when you travel. You simply need to own a good rope. The best thing about jumping rope is that it works for anyone that is capable to repeatedly jump ½ to 1 inch off the ground.

Finding the right jump rope does not need to be difficult. Generally, some of the most important things to consider are its length (self-adjusted), construction/material, adjustability, and the handle design. Think about the handle-to-rope connection, the purpose of your exercise, and the surface.

My overall favorite to recommend for training is the Sonic Boom M2 High-Speed Jump Rope.  However, if you are looking a jump rope that is good value for less money then you I recommend the LOMA Premium Balanced Weighted Jump Rope.
